The Next Generation of Intelligent Hybrid Driving

The SEALION 5 DM-i launched in South Africa in late 2025 as the most affordable plug-in hybrid SUV on the local market. At R499,900 for the Comfort variant, it undercuts the next cheapest PHEV SUV by a significant margin and brings competitive specifications to a price point that was previously occupied only by conventional petrol SUVs.

Overview.

Powertrain and efficiency The DM-i system in the SEALION 5 combines a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine producing 72 kW and 122 Nm with a 145 kW electric motor and a 12.96 kWh Blade Battery. Combined system output is 156 kW and 300 Nm, delivered to the front wheels via a CVT. BYD claims up to 50 km of pure electric driving range and a combined range of over 900 km. Average fuel consumption on the hybrid cycle is around 5.2L/100km, dropping to around 1.4L/100km when the battery is fully charged.

Exterior.

Size and practicality The SEALION 5 measures 4,738 mm in length with a 2,712 mm wheelbase. To give that context, it is slightly larger than a Toyota Corolla Cross and similar in footprint to a Kia Seltos. Boot space is 463 litres with the rear seats up and 1,410 litres with them folded. The SEALION 5 also supports Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) technology, which means you can connect appliances and power accessories directly from the car.

Interior.

Warranty and service plan Every SEALION 5 DM-i comes with a 5-year/100,000 km vehicle warranty, an 8-year/200,000 km power battery warranty, a 4-year/60,000 km service plan, and 5-year roadside assistance. That is a comprehensive package that competes well against longer-established brands in this price bracket.
